Decent mess kit June 29, 2010

Ordered this for my sons boy scout outings. I did not expect much when ordering it, thought it would just last a year or so and I was right. Dented in his Teton Sports pack even though it was on top of everything but easily pushed back into place. Everything compacts together nicely though. Maybe in a few years will get a real nice one for him.

Its a decent kit. A little flimsy and dents from pressure. It cleans pretty easily with water. It's very light and small. The handle of the whole thing is held together with a butterfly nut and screw... My biggest problem is that the nut MELTED when put in the fire. Now I needa go out and get a real nut to replace it. By melted, I mean a puddle of metal where it should have been.

I received one of these kits from a family member who outgrew it. I have cooked with the pot and fry pan quite a few times and have yet to be disappointed. Of course it will ding dent and bend if you're clumsy. But seriously if your this clumsy you should not be around fire and definitely should not be camping.

I just melted mine on a wood-burning fire. If you plan to use your mess kit on a campfire, look elsewhere.

This is a great set for UL backpacking at less then 8oz. When i go solo I just take the pot with lid which is less then 3 oz. Make sure to get a pot grabber (3$, 1oz) to pull the put off the fire b/c otherwise you'll tip it over or get burned. It dented in my pack, and the detachable handle isn't sturdy enough to remove the pan when full of water/food (bends) but hey, its 7 bucks! Still haven't found anything as light for a reasonable price so i'm sticking with this. Very pleased.
