5 out of 5 stars Best Album of the Year   November 22, 2008
C. Thomas (Okemah, OK USA)
Forget American Idol David Cook, the runner up is the one that is going to go the farthest. This album has the right amount of everything. It has originals, remakes of classics, and other amazing songs. David Archuleta is the most talented 17 year old on the planet. His voice is phenomenal. I haven't heard anything this sweet in my entire life. I have to strongly recommend that everyone who loves good music buy this album immediately.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! David Archuleta delivers!   November 22, 2008

Loved his cover tunes sung on American Idol, and knew it was just a taste of the greatness to come from this talented artist. David's debut CD is such a pleasure, and exposes us to so many different facets of his talent. He did a little song-writing on it too! Amazing! It is almost like his voice can change to suit the type of song he is singing. This guy isn't just about ballads, as some wanted to categorize him. He truly could sing the phone book (as often said on American Idol). David Archuleta is a breath of fresh air in the music industry.

5 out of 5 stars "The Voice"   November 21, 2008

As someone who primarily listens to anything BUT Top 40, I surprised myself earlier this year when I took notice of the American Idol contestant, David Archuleta. His music was not my style, but something about his voice just grabbed me. Even critics who can't stand him, concede that his vocal skills are extraordinary: he has a good range, excellent timbre, a raspy and yet soothing tone, and a way with phrasing. I don't look for perfect singing in the music that I like, but in this case, it is just so amazing to hear this type of singing.

That being said, I was a little apprehensive about his debut album. A squeaky clean kid trying to sell himself as a pop Idol could be a little tricky. But, after listening to the full album, I am pleasantly surprised. It IS pop fluff at times (oh who am I kidding.. at all times) but it is exactly the right chord that he had to hit, esp. considering his age and public persona. There are some sparks of great music in here, but essentially it is a solid album, produced by a label known for their teen idol hits, sung by a 17 year old with an amazing voice. Here are some of my highlights of the album:

Track 3-Barriers: Very surprised that he was able to pull off this song. A little reggae-ish with David crooning about a relationship that can't be saved. During the bridge, it sounds like he is heartbroken; this is one of the top vocal highlights on the album for me.

Track 5- A Little Too Not Over You: David helped co-write this song and while it's nothing mind-blowing lyrically, the words do flow nicely with the music (set to waltz time). His voice is perfect for this type of melodic tune (and they try to throw in some R&B elements in this one)

Track 6. You Can: The lyrics are fitting for him, talking about meeting `the one'. The line "show me that good things come to those who wait" is so cliche, but brilliant at the same time b/c David actually makes it believable.

Track 9. To Be With You: My favorite track of the album, a simple love song, with limited piano and strings, but a very powerful song in terms of his vocals (which is understated, yet so emotional). The bridge is the top vocal highlight of the whole album for me, when he ends a word with an almost-gasp. Just brilliant.

Bonus tracks:
Works for me!: I guess this song was left off the main album, because it would have stood out too much. The lyrics are only average, but the throwback (semi-Stevie Wonder) vibe and acoustic sound highlights his soulful voice. His falsetto in this one is a joy to hear. I imagine that this type of sound would be the logical next step in his musical career.

All in all, buy this album if you enjoy pure pop (essentially that is what this album aims for) If not, then download a few songs that I mentioned.. if anything, you won't be disappointed with the quality of his voice.

5 out of 5 stars Best Pop Album of 2008!!   November 21, 2008

I must say David Archuleta is a vocal superstar and was meant to record pop music. From the moment I heard CRUSH, I know he on to something--big! Now, that I have heard the whole album I am more blown away by this soon-to-be 18 year old man. Not only does he have the gift to sing well, but write songs well too. One of the songs he wrote is my favorite on the whole CD, ("A little Too Not Over You"). The first time I heard the full track, I could immediately relate to the lyrics. Who hasn't seen their ex lover with someone else and still have strong feelings for that person? I sure have.

"Angels" is another great track, which he sung on AI. It is a beautiful ballad about loving angels when it is hard to love another human being. Everytime I hear this song, I cry. That is how powerful his voice is.

I love this whole record and can't wait to recieve my physical copy for christmas. :) He will be the next big thing in pop music. I can feel it in my bones!!

5 out of 5 stars listen to his skill and then the songs   November 21, 2008

I have been listening to male singers for over 25 years and have bemoaned the loss of the level of skill that was once more readily available. Sinatra on ballads, Damone for tone, Darin for rhythm, Cook for style and so much more. I agree that David Archuleta's first album is targeted to his prime audience and that a few cuts are a bit heavy on the production side ( albeit with great recording studio skill ). For those of you, however, who like the art of singing, listen a second or a third time and focus on what David is doing with his voice. His phrasing, his breath control, his modulation during short phrases and his matching of the tone of his voice to the word is remarkable. On some songs , he actually alters the timber of his voice during a long note...listen to how he matches the word ( length of singing ) to the length of the note. Sinatra was wonderful at that so that he sounded like he was really singing words...not speaking them to music. Finally , David does not fish around for pitch...He must have close to perfect pitch and he always in the center of note..not sliding up to where he should be ..that permits him to be clear and to stay with a rhythm so well. On some of the upbeat songs he is using his voice as a musical instrument and not singing around the music. I know that it would not be sound business decision for an almost 18 year old but I would love for him to add a few standards that permit him to infuse emotion in the lyric and make some old songs new again. For example, his ' Imagine " will likely be the classic version for many young people going forward. David Archuleta has a rare gift and we should encourage him to use all of his skills to reform the modern definition of a performance standard.
