2 out of 5 stars Works for some devices, but lack of voltage regulator is a problem   July 4, 2008
Richard Byers (Seattle, WA USA)
With 4 alkaline batteries as it suggests, I get about 6V out, but the USB spec requires between 4.75V and 5.25V.

I was worried I might damage my devices with the extra voltage, but figured I'd give it a shot. My HTC Mogul cell phone appeared to charge fine, but my iPod Nano 3rd gen didn't appear to do anything (and the green light did not come on the power pack). I switched to NiMH rechargables (total voltage about 5.5V) and now my iPod charges fine. The iPod says "Rated 5-30V" on the back, but clearly there's something about 6V it doesn't like.

So, the power pack appears to be doing what I need of it, but I'm still worried about the damage the out-of-spec voltage may cause. I'm surprised they can even use the USB logo when they're clearly in violation of the USB specification.

4 out of 5 stars Good and inexpensive, WORKS with rechargeables   February 25, 2008

I purchased a TWO pack of these fall 2007 and they have worked very well for charging my cingular 8125 phone-pocket PC. ANOTHER reviewer stated that it didn't work well with rechargeable batteries due to a lack of voltage regulation. That may be true IF your device needs 5 volts or more, but most every cell phone I've tried this in from the Iphone to motorola razor (friends phone's) it works VERY well since the internal Li-ion battery of the phones are rated at 3.7 volts. I use only Ni-MH rechargeable batteries and the voltage of 4 of them is 5 volts-- more than enough to charge most cell phones. I would recommend HIGHER capacity rechargeables 2300ma or better. I've tried other power banks from local stores that ONLY have 3 aa or aaa batteries and they are junk. For the price I have NOT not found anything BETTER than the DATEK model and recommend them to my friends.

1 out of 5 stars No voltage regulator   September 3, 2007

No voltage regulator, so rechargeable batteries don't work. Not worth even 1 star (but you have to put something in).
