Amazon.com Product Description
Sleek, slender, and absolutely stunning--exactly what you'd expect from a Pearl, one of RCA's Gem line of digital audio players. Not only can you download and listen to your favorite songs easily, but you also can enjoy the ability to listen and record FM radio directly onto your Pearl.

No Cords Required
The Pearl's direct USB connector design means you can quickly download your favorite open MP3, open WMA, and unprotected AAC tracks from any computer. This multifunction device will double as your MP3 player and a USB data storage device.

Small but mighty, the Pearl gives you room for up to 340 songs and the option of adding even more memory using the MicroSD card slot.
Expandable
Want more room? Not a problem. Add expandable memory in the MicroSD card slot and load it up with music. This option gives you the flexibility you need to store additional songs, audio books, and other large files.

Crystal Clear View
The Pearl's 0.8-inch OLED screen provides a vibrant viewing experience. A quick glance is all you need to see your navigation or information about the current track.

Tune in While You're Out
Better than a simple FM receiver, the Pearl allows you to record while listening to an FM station. The player will store the MP3 file until you're ready to listen again or download it to your computer.

2 out of 5 stars A Very Affordable Disappointment !   January 3, 2009
Daniel St.Aubin (usa)
After carefully researching the specs of this mp3 player I thought I would be satisfied with it, especially at such a low price...

Unfortunately this turned out to be another example of:

"you get what you pay for"...

I don't have an extra $200.00 lying around to buy an ipod due to the fact that I have bills to pay, which is why I took the cheaper route. Upon buying this I thought "hey why not? it can hold 300 songs and it has a radio".

To make this review as short as possible, I'll just summarize the pros and cons.

Pros: it's an mp3 player with fm radio, and allows you to record voice memos and songs from the radio etc.

Cons: The max volume is not sufficient, and THE BATTERY LIFE IS HORRIBLE!

I don't know what happened in recent years with electronics, but I've had a seriously bad luck streak when it comes to battery life with mobile phones and other devices. It's supposed to last up to 35 hours so I figure give or take a few hours, maybe it'll run for a good 30 hours which would be cool.

Far from it! This player shuts off in under 3 hours!

and yes I've tested it 3 times with a Duracell, Energizer, and the generic battery that came with the player. All 3 had the same outcome.

My biggest gripe is the battery life. It doesn't matter how many cool features it has. If the battery life is bad then it's pretty much useless.

I advise those who are looking to buy an mp3 player to spend the few extra bucks and not grab the cheapest player. This is the 2nd "budget" player I've had and I'm once again let down.

If this is what RCA has to offer they need to stick to making TV's.

4 out of 5 stars Great Player for under $30   December 25, 2008
A. Prickett (South Elgin, IL. USA)
I am baffled by the negative reviews for this thing. My kids got these today for Christmas and so far, they are great! I loaded almost 250 songs in about 5 minutes. It's possible that if you have trouble loading music into this thing, you just don't know how to use your computers file system. You can drag and drop from anywhere you keep your music on your computer or use windows media player to sync it perfectly. The file system is similar to an ipod. You can select from artist, album and song. Great sound. The 1GB is not expandable but for an 8 and 10 yr. old 300 songs is plenty. It's about the size of a Bic lighter. It doesn't have any sort of clip and the software it comes with is not that great but you really don't need it anyway because it's easy enough to drag and drop as i've already mentioned. If your getting this for jogging or the gym or for kids or even audio books, this thing will work fine.

2 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for   October 16, 2008
Stephanie Mooney (River Rouge, Mi United States)
There is a reason this MP3 player is under $50. My 8 year old received one for his birthday last month and it's even frustrating him. First of all, as everyone else has mentioned, the music is horribly jumbled. It is nearly impossible to find what you're looking for without wanting to throw the thing out the window. Although it is supposed to support playlists, we have so far been unable to get any to load on the player. We have tried using the HORRIBLE software that came with the player, Windows Media Player, and copy/pasting the playlist file directly into the "Playlist" folder on the device with no results. Although the device claims to support audiobooks, it doesn't tell you that it only supports them if they are purchased from Audible. Audiobooks we previously purchased for him on CD from the bookstore are automatically sorted into the music category, and with no way to organize them, the tracks play in random order making it pointless to even attempt books with this player. It takes this player an absurdly long time to boot up or shut down. The built-in USB is nice if you have USB ports on the face of your computer case, but an extension cord would have been a nice inclusion for those of us with rear-mounted ports. It's a pain to have to fumble around in the small space behind my computer trying to fit the plug into a port I can't see.
All in all, it plays music so it deserves a little credit, but very little. Don't buy it unless you have very low standards.

1 out of 5 stars A player without a prayer   September 26, 2008
Luke Morey
My issues are straightforward enough:

-Remains endlessly in "Shutting down" mode until battery is removed.

-File structure in player is unpredictably and nonsensically scrambled

-Flip-out USB connector fails to communicate with computer at all after very limited use

And this is the second unit to perform this way; the first was returned to the store.

1 out of 5 stars no microSD slot   September 25, 2008

The black 1GB model does not have a microSD slot as described above. The blue 2GB model does, however...
