3 out of 5 stars Works well - IF you have a Firewire adapter and cable   March 27, 2008

The battery works as advertised, and the included case, while of minimal quality, works well enough to hold the battery and your iPod (albeit snugly). The charging cable for the battery is a mini power plug on one end and a Firewire cable on the other.

However, there are some important caveats:

(1) This is Firewire based, so you need the Firewire version of the iPod cable in order for it to charge/run your iPod. It'll charge/extend the battery life of newer iPods... but only with a Firewire cable.

(2) This unit in turn is charged via the Firewire wall adapter. The manual specifically recommends against using the Firewire port in your computer. So... traveling will now involve adding that adapter to your pack of goodies.

(3) The case (not surprisingly) is not the "deluxe" case advertised on the package (in fact, I think the word "deluxe" almost always implies the opposite in package marketing). It's usable.

If this were USB based and chargeable via the USB port on a computer, I'd give it 5 stars (who cares if the case is cheap?). But, given that it's Firewire based _and_ requires an additional adapter (assuming most users have now moved to USB-based systems), it's a bit antiquated.

Initial charge times are around 6 hours, and supposedly go down to around 5 after the battery is conditioned. I think the ideal use for this battery would be long flights or train rides. If you have access to a charger (as in car trips), I'd not bother with this.

On the plus side, I'd imagine it would also power other Firewire external devices. I haven't tried to do so, however.
