Amazon.com Product Description
The iFlip may look like a mini laptop, but underneath the lid sits a whole new world of video possibilities. Open the iFlip's cover and you'll see a universal dock on the bottom that holds and charges select iPods, along with an 8.4-inch widescreen LCD display for video playback. The screen is ideal for watching stored iPod movies on planes or entertaining the kids on long car trips, plus it offers an easy way to share your favorite digital photos with friends without hooking up to a full-size TV. Add in an intuitive onscreen menu system and a host of connectivity options and you have the perfect portable video player for almost all on-the-go applications.

The video screen is crisp and versatile, with such features as a selectable aspect ratio (16:9 or 4:3), a 480 x 234 native resolution in RGB mode, a 300 cd/m2 brightness rating, and a 350:1 contrast ratio. In addition, the 75-degree horizontal viewing angle and 70- degree vertical viewing angle lets fellow passengers see the screen without straining their necks. And don't worry about the iFlip running out of juice on the first leg of your cross-country trip, as the integrated rechargeable lithium-ion battery delivers roughly five hours of video playback per charge. To renew the battery, simply plug in the AC adapter and you'll recharge both the iFlip and iPod simultaneously.

Finally, the iFlip isn't restricted to iPod use only, as it connects to other video devices via the S-video output and line-in jacks. Other details include dual headphone jacks for people who travel in pairs and adjustable brightness, color, hue, and contrast controls. The iFlip--which is compatible with the iPod nano (1G and 2G), iPod video (5G), iPod photo (regular and U2 model), iPod 4G with click wheel (regular and U2 model), and iPod mini--measures 8.7 by 1.8 by 6.7 inches (W x H x D) when closed and is backed by a 90-day warranty.

What's in the Box
iFlip video system, iPod adapters, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, S-video cable, line out cable, AC adapter, warranty card, user's manual.

2 out of 5 stars Serious problems with aspect ratio   December 26, 2008
Mayor Bloomburger (San Francisco, USA)

I got this as a gift and, even though there are some problems with it, I'm going to keep it for long flights. Why on earth they don't show movies anymore on long flights is beyond me, but this device is a good solution since it's a lot cheaper than even $300 laptops and less of a pain to set up.

The picture is not pirated-video bad like another reviewer says. Its not very good, but its better than horrible. The sound is, I think, very good.

A couple other reviewers mention the horrible aspect ratio problems. This alone would have me return the device, but it was a gift. Even if your ipod and the device are both set for wide-screen, it will stretch the picture horizontally but not vertically, leaving a ridiculously narrow image with black bars on the top of the screen. This is totally unacceptable. Using a 4:3 setting on your ipod and the wide-screen setting on the device fills up the screen but everything is short and squat and your not seeing the whole picture. SUPER LAME! Keep shopping!

The best solution is to set the ipod and the device to 4:3 - you get a good image, but you only get 6 or 7 of the 8.5 inches you paid for, with black bars on the sides of the screen. This item is not light to carry around, so those missing two inches are, I feel, insult to injury. Still, even with cut-off the screen is much bigger than a PSP or iPhone and the sound is loud!

2 out of 5 stars Much better options out there   April 21, 2008

I just bought this item and as soon as I saw the video quality, decided I should return it. If you aren't tech savvy and don't understand all the descriptions about the video quality, then this description should help you: it looks like watching a pirated movie. You know the type that you can buy off the street where some guy just took a camcorder into the movie theatre? That's what your dvd quality video will look like on this thing. So suffice to say - it looks awful. Its a shame really because I liked the build, the weight, the dual-earphone inputs - but overall, if you are getting this item its so you can watch your ipod videos on a bigger screen - and when you watch them on this screen you'll see how bad the image looks and instead squint your eyes and just stare at the ipod for two hours.

4 out of 5 stars Great product but depends on the price   November 15, 2007

I decided to try this out as the price dropped substantially ($200 to $79) and I really like watching movies/TV shows on my video ipod when traveling. The challenge has always been the battery life as the Ipod screen tends to kill the battery very fast.

Since I had a $50 Amazon certificate, I said what the heck. Many of the opinions prior such as it can be scratched easily, it's a bit difficult to open at first, and that stuff gets stuck in the speaker holes are all valid, ironically so as I thought those people were just very anal. Well, they are true but don't distract from the positives:

1. It lasts forever as you don't use the Ipod screen and I've read that this unit can go for over 8 hours of video. I've tried five at the most and it still was going.
2. It's a great travel companion as now I have portable speakers w/ my Ipod as well.
3. The quality of the video is as good as my old portable DVD player so I'm pretty happy with it.

Overall, I think $100 is a fair price and knowing what I know would purchase it again. Lastly, Amazon is the bomb...

4 out of 5 stars Great Product but NOT with the new iPod Classic   October 9, 2007

I have loved my memorex iflip and have happily used it for over a year with my 5th generation 80GB. It has great sound, pretty good picture, consistent quality video, and a great battery life. I've been very happy with it and use it daily.

However, I just bought the new iPod classic 160GB. And found, when you dock the new iPod Classic, the iflip gets an error message (saying that TV out is selected, connect a video device). The problem is, that the iPod is connected to a video device (THE IFLIP) This is apparently a pretty common problem because Apple has kindly put a notice about the error message on their site, but indicates the fix is to connect a 30 pin AV connector to the ipod. Something that isn't possible with the Memorex because the built in dock IS the connection. So, now I have a great new ipod, and a great old iflip and a bunch of itunes videos I can't watch.

I'm afraid to buy another ipod video becuase of concerns over getting the same error message. And, I hate to get rid of a really great video player.
