Processor
The Intel Atom processor uses a brand new design structure that packs in 47 million transistors into a single chip sized at just 22mm (0.87 inches), and it uses just 2.5 watts of power--less than 1/10 of the 35 watts used by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor--for excellent battery management. This 1.6 GHz Atom N270 processor also includes a power-optimized front side bus of 533 MHz for faster data transfer on demanding mobile applications and a 512 KB L2 cache (which temporarily stores data).

Storage
This version of the Aspire One comes with a 160 GB hard disk drive (5400 RPM), which offers enough to room to hold a digital audio library of over 26,000 songs and still have room left over for movies, games, and a large collection of software. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.

The 1 GB of installed RAM (512 MB onboard memory and one 512 MB DIMM, 533 MHz) can be expanded to a maximum of 1.5 GB of RAM,

DVD/CD Drive

The 8.9-inch screen has a WSVGA resolution (1024 x 600) and support for up a 262K color depth. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, which uses shared video memory with the main memory. Acer's CrystalBrite display technology guarantees the best possible visual experience by preventing the diffusion of surrounding light and internal ray. Compared to normal TFT LCDs, Acer CrystalBrite technology is able to read color coordinates more accurately, thus minimizing distortion and creating high-fidelity colors in all environments.

This notebook includes an integrated audio card with Microsoft DirectSound compatibility, and it includes two stereo speakers.

5 out of 5 stars Bud on the Bayou   January 8, 2009
Shannon M. Mills
I had been searching for fully functional laptop computer but smaller in size to be easy to carry around for a long time. I ran across this one in late November and it seemed to be the right thing. I have a desktop I use in my office room but wanted the wireless capabilities and portability of the smaller portable computer. Yeah, I tried an iPhone and it was not what I wanted either, I needed a real computer. This computer is absolutely great and does everything I expected and much more. In fact it's hotter than my Dell desktop. Now it doesn't have an internal CD/DVD drive and that's acceptable for me because the only time I use that is loading programs or the such. It's small, the size of a Steno Pad, but the keyboard is bigger than most other netbooks I've seen. Great product and now I'm using this computer more than my desktop. I purchased a small external mouse and turned off the built in touch pad because my great big hands kept touching the pad and now I'm in business. The smaller keyboard really didn't take long to get used to either. This computer along with my 8GB traveldrive and I'm set for anything. If where I am trying to use it doesn't fit for the mouse I just turn the touch pad back on and away I go. It works for me...that's my story and I'm sticking to it.....great product.

3 out of 5 stars Serves its purpose   January 8, 2009
Rae
I purchased this back in Nov so I have had it for a while now. I got it because I wanted something light weight to carry around to work and school and for this purpose it is great. The key board is a little small and you have to be careful when typing. I seem to constantly hit buttons that make the print smaller or does some other wacky thing to the screen. Just yesterday the speakers started making a crackling noise so I guess that means they are going to give out at some point.

Other than that its a great little computer serves the purpose I wanted but if you have issues with sight and dexterity don't get this computer go for a slightly larger one. The mouse pad on this drives me nuts sometimes because it takes so much to get the arrow to move. I usually use a wireless mouse anyway. As I said the screen is small and can be a little annoying when trying to watch a movie or see the full page of a site but overall its not that bad. To me its all worth it not to have to lug around a large laptop.

I gave it 3 stars because of the mouse pad and the fact that the speakers seem to be giving out already and I rarely have anything playing. Also the battery life started out lasting around five hours but now seems to be closer to 3-4.

1 out of 5 stars Touchpad doesn't work. Returned it.   January 8, 2009

I don't like to return things, and I don't like to write negative reviews. Well, doing both..

I thought it would be a good idea to leave my 4.5 years old IBM T42 at home and trave with smaller, lighter and brand new Aspire One. Wrong. The touchpad of Aspire One stopped working just a few days after I purchased it. I swear I didn't drop the netbook or abuse it in any form. The touchpad just stopped working. Fortunately I brought an external mouse. If you happend to see an idiot at the airport using mouse on the surface of airport seat during the past holiday season, that could be me. My 4.5 year old IBM never has such a problem. Touchpad failure beats the purpose of netbook.

Two other minor issues. If you leave the netbook idle for a long time, or close the cover, it goes to sleep mode, which is good. However, it is not intuitive to me how to wake it up later. My T42 will wake up by just a touch on any key or mouse. I cleaned the surface with a tissue -- not the softest kind, but it is a paper tissue. Guess what? A piece of the beauitiful blue paint was sactched out. It is a little piece, but obvious enough for anyone to notice.

I don't know if Amazon will put 15% penalty for this return. If it does, this is equivlent to a two dollar per day rental of a netbook without touchpad. not a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars A best buy for sure   January 8, 2009
Charles G. Abbott
I travel frequently and the old Gateway laptop I was using kept getting heaver and slower, so I purchased an Acer Apire One. It's perfect for my needs. I use it primairly for keeping up on e-mails, taking meeting notes and access to the internet. The keyboard and screen is a little small, but any inconvenience is definitely overcome by the low price and light weight.

I am very happy with the battery life and periodically forget to check the meter before it runs out of juice.

I would highly recommend this to all of my friends.

5 out of 5 stars Best laptop I ever have....   January 8, 2009
Jack McNamee (LA Habra, CA)
I have the Acer Aspire One and I love it. It's small, compact and light weight. After I got this, I have never once used my big laptop again. Prefect for students who wants to take notes in class or browsing internet in the coffee shop. I also got a 9-cell 7800mAh battery for this laptop at Amazon.com. With the 9-Cell battery, my AA1 lasts about 7-10 hours on normal daily use. I use it at day and charge it at night, which it never ran out of power on me. I don't have to worry about battery life anymore.
