Amazon.com Product Description
Don't let a sleeping family keep you from your new action adventure movie, DTS 5.1 concert, or online video game tournament by setting up these Pioneer wireless surround sound headphones. The SE-DIR800C phones, which connect to any 5.1-channel source--including a DVD player, game console, digital cable box, or satellite receiver--are equipped with Dolby Headphone technology, which produces up to five virtual loudspeakers in your head by directing and reflecting the sound from each channel. The effect is a stunning surround experience, far more dimensional than with typical headphones, and, some say, even better than with a high-performance surround speaker system. The audio is natural sounding and doesn't cause "listener fatigue" as do many other headphones. The phones also work with a variety of surround formats, including Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Surround.

Most conveniently, the SE-DIR800C phones are completely cordless. The small wireless transmitter connects to your source (DVD player, game console, etc.) and broadcasts a clear, strong signal via infrared technology to the headphones. Thanks to the wireless technology, you won't snag a headphone cord on furniture, your dog, your glasses, or anything else.

The phones feature a trio of "virtual room" presets from which to choose. The options actually reproduce the sound of a playback system in up to three different listening environments based on the acoustic measurements of real rooms. The small room setting (DH1) re-creates a small, well-damped room with very little reverberation that's perfect for both movies and music-only recordings, while the medium room (DH2) is a more acoustically live (or "wet") room that's well suited to both formats as well (with moderate reverberation). Meanwhile, the large room setting (DH3) offers a bigger sound, more like the audio within a concert hall or movie theater.

A final bonus stems from the onboard volume control. With a volume dial on the headphone itself, users can easily turn up the audio without getting out of the chair. The SE-DIR800C phones, which offer a transmission range of up to 26 feet, are an ideal choice for folks who live in busy households where people go to sleep early, or for anyone who wants a little audio privacy while watching movies or listening to music. The phones are backed by a 90-day warranty on parts and labor.

2 out of 5 stars Great Sound - Poor Execution   December 28, 2008

These headphones have great sound quality. The transmitter is easy to set up. Switching from analog to digital sound has to be done maually. An inconvenience from your easy chair. It should have either automatic switching or a remote. The signal is infared so any obstruction will wipe out the signal. Just be aware that wandering pets can wipe out your signal, so transmitter location is critical. The unit comes with a digital coaxial cable and would be better served it it came with an optical digital cable. The onboard battery charger will only charge Pioneer brand rechargeable batteries. When they wear out you will have to buy Pioneer batteries at a current cost of $49.95 per each AA battery. The aforemention issues are the basis for my rating. The engineering around operation and maintenance these headphones could have been more intelligent.

5 out of 5 stars and we would like to thank our guest speakers...   December 12, 2008

Don't believe what they tell you, there has to be more than one speaker on each side! Surround sound, WOW, digital clarity, WOW.

First the negatives:
I have the transmitter connected to my Denon 889 Denon AVR-889 700-Watt 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver through the VCR2 Toslink digital out. Unfortunately Pioneer only supplies a coax digital cable, so I had to spring for a Toslink cable, I don't think it would have hurt them to supply that one too.

It's infrared. That's good in that it doesn't interfere with anything like your phone or router, but it's bad in that it needs line of sight from the headphones to the transmitter. I am sitting directly in line, but if I move my hand up to my face (like sometimes I want to adjust the headhones) then the sound abruptly turns off.

They aren't too light, so long wear can get slightly uncomfortable. Nothing bad, but I find myself wanting to adjust them a bit. I also don't like the head band, I find myself pushing it away from my head and not really sure what it's purpose in life is.

To recharge the batteries you have to remove them from the headphones and put them into the recharger built into the transmitter. It would have been nice to have a recharging headphone stand.

OK, now for the good:
The sound is fantastic, it's so good that I get totally immersed in them and don't even think I'm wearing headphones. In fact every once in a while I find myself lifting away from one ear to make sure the room isn't screaming decibels.

The surround sound is amazing, you'll swear there are surround speakers in your head, instead of just some clever magic trick.

Summary:
I use these headphones mostly for watching HD movies late at night on my beautiful Samsung LN52A650 Samsung LN52A650 52-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color. They do exactly what I hoped they would do, they make for a better than cinema experience without disturbing the neighbours. So it's easy for me to forgive the shortcomings, because these phones deliver as promised.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for gaming or TV   December 5, 2008

I was worried about these since I have a 50" Panasonic plasma TV and some have reported these not working well with plasma, but in my case they work flawlessly. No noise, no drop outs, just convincing 5.1 surround sound for me while my fiancee naps in the next room.

If you're looking for wireless surround sound headphones, these are the ones to try 1st.

5 out of 5 stars Great   December 4, 2008

Have this connected to my xbox 360 via the digital toslink and the digital coax to my directv. Both sound great. Volume is adjustable and strong. No static at all. I use the energizer lithium batteries and they last twice as long as the rechargeable batteries that are included, plus lithium batteries weight twice as less but you toss them when they die as they are not rechargeables. Overall great wireless headphones with good sound. I understand you can use a additional same headphone with the same base fyi.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT.   October 15, 2008

Pros: CRYSTAL clear and jitter-free audio signal via highly-stable infrared link. Superb sound resolution throughout audible frequency range. Decodes Dolby Digital and DTS! Comfortable on head, you'll forget it's there. Headphones run off standard AA batteries (no risk of having to buy a proprietary company-supplied battery that is expensive to replace, and not guaranteed to be produced in the future). Headphones are sleek and stylish, and so is the base unit.

Cons: Limited line-of-sight range (inherent with IR signals); limited to about 30 ft. and must be free of obstacles in the Rcv path. Plastic construction of the headphones are a little brittle and not meant to be mistreated. Base station produces a generous amount of heat right near the input AC power receptacle. When starting audio, there is a half-second delay as the base unit synchronizes with the audio stream (minor nuissance, and this might only be a problem with digital audio signals).

Full summary:

Hands down, the best I've ever had. Money well spent! Even though you get a limited range, the reception is CRYSTAL clear. You must, you must, you must, configure your audio source properly in order to maximize the quality of sound that these cans can produce! Do you expect to hear good sound from these headphones if your sound card is less than crap? Or if your equalizer values are all wrong? Buy quality components to back this thing up. Ignorance of audio tuning can leave you wondering why these things suck. And ignorance of proper audio tuning can be the one thing that makes you return or scrap this otherwise amazing system. It's just like a car or a PC; if it isn't tuned right, it'll run like arse!

These things decode dolby digital and DTS, need I say any more? What does this mean for your listening experience? It means these cans are perfect for cinema, gaming, or whatever audio task there is under the sun. They run off rechargeable AA batteries, not off of a propriety company-supplied battery that makes for an expensive replacement years down the road--if they are even still manufactured!

As noted above, the plastic construction of the headphones themselves are a little brittle, and certainly not meant to be man-handled. So be gentle as this is a quality product worthy of respect and great care. When turned on, the base station produces a generous amount of heat right near the input power receptacle. Fortunately, the casing of the base station has escape vents at the corners. I've read other reviews and I don't know what people are thinking when they say the base is ugly. Eh, I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Furthermore, other reviewers have noted that the bass frequencies are lacking in oomph and in clarity. I HIGHLY disagree. Like I said, if your COMPLETE audio system is tuned right, these headphones will SURELY deliver to your expectations. It takes a good hour of experimentation and tweaking of your settings (mostly software on the PC). Play with the equalizer. Sometimes this involves multiple applications! As far as home theater goes, make sure your EQ--whether electronic or component--is tuned right. And on that note, I recommend purchasing an all-glass fiber optic cable. I replaced the plastic TOSlink with a 250-strand glass cable and the clarity jumped noticeably, especially in the low freqs which tend to get cut more easily.

The headband and the earcups seem to be made of a synthetic leather or something, but are EXTREMELY comfortable. And on that note, you won't even feel the cans resting on your head because they are so light, MUCH lighter than my old Tritton AX360 headphones (those were a good pair too).

Pioneer is a trusted and time-honored brand of electronic entertainment, and these heaphones certainly live up to that and carry on that reputation. There is only one minor nuissance: that is when you send an audio stream to the unit, the base station synchronizes with it, producing a half-second delay. Not big deal, really. My advice: DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT. IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY...JUST BUY THEM.
YOU ____WON'T___ _REGRET IT!
