Which Dock Is for You?
JBL's been in the iPod dock business for awhile, so it's no surprise that the company has crafted enough models to keep up with an ever-increasing army of iPod owners. Which one is right for you? Well, that depends what kind of pod person you are:

For the Power Hungry
For those who seek more volume, the On Stage 400ID should be your first stop. At 2x15 Watts, it's the loudest and largest of the bunch, and features an Atlas woofer for added bass. But size isn't everything--the On Stage Micro boasts the same wattage rating without the woofer.

For the Weekend Warriors
Those who need a dock that they can take anywhere should investigate docks that can be powered by batteries. The On Stage Micro runs on four AAAs, whereas the On Stage IIIP and On Stage III run on six. Take your music to the beach, on camping trips--wherever you can't bear to be without it.

For the iPhone Techies

IR remote--The JBL On Stage IIIP IR remote has several modes of operation. The Music mode allows you to control the volume, change tracks, fast forward, and fast reverse. The Navigation mode allows you to access menus on your mobile digital device just as if you were controlling the unit itself. Better than my stereo speakers - wow! December 16, 2008

I am just baffled at how JBL manages to pull so much sound out of such a small device.

Pros:
* Incredible sound in a small package
* Easy to use remote and controls on the surface of the unit
* Works with my 3G without the annoying buzzing sound other speakers put off when the phone syncs with the carrier - no need for airplane mode.
* Sleek and attractive. If I had a more powerful fan in the room, I'd say aerodynamic as well.
* This wasn't on the box but was a concern when I bought it: It does in fact work as an alarm clock speaker. As someone that could sleep through artillery, I needed a speaker that would blast me out of bed... woah! It sure does.

Cons:
* Multiple adapters support many iDevices but the adapters are poorly labeled. Would be nice if the model was just printed on the packages.
* Way too much plastic wrapping for my environmentally concerned mind.
* Sideways power bring takes a lot of space on my surge strip.

Better if:
* There was an indentation to post the remote control - there's just no where to put it when you are done other than just laying it on top.

This speaker dock comes with a variety of dock adaptors. Unfortunately, you will have to provide your own adaptor to use it safely with the iPhone 3G. The universal dock adaptor is available from Apple (a package of 3 for $9.00).

I'm happy with the speaker itself. It has enough power to fill a small room. If you want to rock your whole house, you will probably be happier with a more powerful speaker.

I bought this product over two 1/2 months ago, and it was defected. I returned it to JBL for an exchange. I had to pay for return shipment plus insurance of their defective dock. It took them two months to ship me out a new product. I called and they would give me an eta, but then push it back every two weeks. So finally I receive my product in the mail and it was the WRONG PRODUCT. It was the on Stage III not IIIP(for IPhone). So I paid close to $200.00(including the tax and the return shipping) and I don't even have the right dock. Do not buy!!!

This was a great little speaker system until...

I recently updated my iPhone 1st generation to software version 2.1, and this speaker system is no longer compatible. When I plug it in, it now asks me if I want to go into Airplane Mode, and does not charge the phone.

Recommended, as long as you don't update your iPhone software to the latest version!

I've had previous versions of this product and find this one much improved.
- It does work with my iPhone 3G, including the charging.
- Improved sound quality.
- Battery powered (optional)

The only downgrade with respect to past versions is the remote control:
- Less intuitive buttons. Difficult to operate in the dark
- Dependent on Infrared, instead of the old RF. This means you need direct line of sight to the unit for it to work.
