Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Description -- Posted May 22, 2008
The JBL On Stage III portable loudspeaker dock is the ideal travel partner. Imagine the convenience of taking the JBL On Stage III speaker dock on the road or enjoying the sound right at your desktop. Connected to your iPod, MP3 player, or other music source, it produces clean, powerful sound--while also charging your dockable iPod. With the help of the IR remote, you can take complete control of your music with the JBL On Stage III loudspeaker dock.

Take complete control of your music.

Combines many proprietary technologies for the highest quality sound, offering astonishing bass and clear sound from any direction.

Compatible with docking versions of the iPod, including the iPod touch, iPod nano 3G, and iPod classic 6G.

Which Dock Is for You?
JBL's been in the iPod dock business for awhile, so it's no surprise that the company has crafted enough models to keep up with an ever-increasing army of iPod owners. Which one is right for you? Well, that depends what kind of pod person you are:

For the Power Hungry
For those who seek more volume, the On Stage 400ID should be your first stop. At 2x15 Watts, it's the loudest and largest of the bunch, and features an Atlas woofer for added bass. But size isn't everything--the On Stage Micro boasts the same wattage rating without the woofer.

For the Weekend Warriors
Those who need a dock that they can take anywhere should investigate docks that can be powered by batteries. The On Stage Micro runs on four AAAs, whereas the On Stage IIIP and On Stage III run on six. Take your music to the beach, on camping trips--wherever you can't bear to be without it.

For the iPhone Techies
The iPhone owner--if you can stand to put the thing down--has a couple choices. The On Stage IIIP provides a smaller and more portable option, or the On Stage 200ID gives a bit more power. These two docks support all docking iPod models as well.

For the Featurephiles or Heavy Sleepers
Some of us just aren't content with basic functionality; we need more buttons, more lights. Others just need a little nudge to wake up in the morning. If this is you, then the On Time 200ID and 400IHD are for you. Both feature an alarm clock and AM/FM radio, with the ability to wake up to your favorite song stored on your iPod (and then reject it with the snooze button). Of course, for the masochists, a classic buzzer is also available. The On Time 400IHD adds a dual alarm clock and HD radio to the mix, for a crystal-clear signal and a variety of text-based information (artist name, song title, weather alerts, school closings, etc.) scrolled across your screen.

Something for Everyone
All of these models feature a remote control for full iPod navigation, Evercharge topology to charge iPod even when not connected to a PC or the system is turned off, a mini-jack for auxiliary devices, and the sleek design and solid performance you'd expect from JBL.

Compatibility
The JBL On Stage III system is compatible with dockable versions of the iPod, including the iPod touch, iPod classic 6G, and iPod nano 3G. A stereo mini jack connection also allows you to enjoy high-quality audio from a variety of other devices, such as MP3 and CD players, desktop computers (all platforms), satellite radio, and laptops.

Easy-to-Use Music and Navigation Controls
Just a touch of the music controls increases or decreases the volume. Using the navigation controls, browse songs, playlists and photos, change tracks and settings, and more.

Connection Versatility
The JBL On Stage III loudspeaker dock is a multimedia focal point. Enjoy your iPod, view photos or videos, and listen to virtually any other auxiliary audio component, all through the JBL On Stage III system.

Additional Features

  • IR remote--The JBL On Stage III IR remote has several modes of operation. The Music mode allows you to control the volume, change tracks, fast forward, and fast reverse. The Navigation mode allows you to access menus on your mobile digital device just as if you were controlling the unit itself. You can search your music, watch your slideshows, and find and play your videos.
  • Evercharge topology--The system charges your iPod, even when not connected to the computer or if the system is off.

Advanced Technology
The JBL On Stage III loudspeaker dock combines many proprietary technologies to provide the highest quality sound, astonishing bass, and clear and accurate sound from any direction.

  • Odyssey transducers--The Odyssey drivers deliver accurate high frequencies while capable of low-frequency extension of four octaves, unlike traditional powered tweeters. This design provides a full, rich frequency response, from low bass to the highest highs.
  • Slipstream port design--The port minimizes boundary layer separation, producing high-output bass with low distortion.
  • COE (Computer-Optimized Equalization)--The system equalization is computer-optimized to provide a rich, complete soundstage over a range of listening positions.
  • OCT (Optimized Compression Topology)--The proprietary compression technology ensures clean, accurate sound at high output levels.
  • AEMS (Advanced Energy Management System)--The automatic battery-saving shutoff will automatically put the system into Sleep mode when there is no audio input. The system awakens with just a touch and resumes at the same volume level.
  • Battery-powered--The JBL On Stage III system uses most types of AA batteries. Six fresh AA batteries allow up to 12 hours of continuous play at normal listening levels. An amber LED flashes when the battery protection circuit senses that the batteries are low. Consider rechargeable batteries (e.g., NiMH) to reduce waste and help the environment.

1 out of 5 stars terrible sound   January 6, 2009
H. Dirkmaat
I returned this docking station. It made a popping sound each time you turned it on. Also it gave off a humming sound as it played music. Awful.

5 out of 5 stars great for its price   January 2, 2009
M. Ejbeh (Lebanon)
I am using it for my ipod nano 3G, Great sound for it's size and price!

1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Time or Money On This   January 2, 2009
Melissa (Indiana)
I received this for Christmas, and at first I loved it. It had really good sound quality, or so I thought. Christmas at my parent's house is very loud so there was a lot of talking, the music was just playing in the background. When I brought the unit back to my house (where it is very quiet) I realized the sound quality is horrible. Even without the iPod on it, there is a hissing/static sound. Once I put my iPod in (3G Nano), there was a clicking/popping noise. I'm returning it today.

1 out of 5 stars Static IS a Problem on Nano 4th Gen & Touch 2nd Gen   December 30, 2008
David J. Raffel
Believe the reviews. Just received this unit from Amazon and you can hear the static even before plugging your Ipod in. I tried varying the input volume, with the batteries in or out, using a 4th gen Nano or a 2nd Gen Touch and still had the static. Don't waste your time. I returned it immediately. I appreciated Amazon's no hassle return policy.

1 out of 5 stars Static and interference ruin it   December 30, 2008
Eric Melvin (Fort Worth, TX)
I received this item for Christmas. I was thrilled at the product, it looked and felt high quality and I couldn't wait to get it playing. Then I actually turned it on. The sound is okay at higher levels, but at low to mid levels it is ruined by the constant static and the noises it makes when switching tracks or adjusting anything on the iPod. After four days of listening to it almost non stop, I was about ready to pull my hair out in frustration at the noises it makes. I couldn't even listen to bass heavy music without it sounding distorted, and this was with my iPod's equalizer set on bass reduction. After reading that others have the same problems with it, I returned it today and pitched in some of my own cash to get a Bose Sound Dock Series II. I couldn't be happier with it.

Just a warning to anyone thinking of purchasing this one for yourself or for a loved one: do your research on the different options you have and the potential problems of each one.
