4 out of 5 stars great budget headphones   December 2, 2008
Samuel R. Sides (Western OK)
I ride a motorcycle and use the in canal headphones to fit under my helmet and as ear plugs to block out wind noise. I have a couple different models. I play all of them on my 30g zune. I listen to the music just loud enough to hear make out the words fairly clearly.

Philips SHE9500 sounded good when in positioned perfectly. THe bass sounded good. They have more bass but not as sharp and clean. Like comparing a car stereo to a home theatre. The rubber surrounding were the wire goes in to the speaker is stiff and can irritate your ears if they are pointed up witch is nessisary when wearing a helmet. They aren't very secure when active either. The tredmill will knock them loose. My zune had to be turned up to 16 out of 20 on the volume.

My sony MDR-AS40EX were very secure but at the expense of sound quality. The sound is not for audiophiles but they don't buy 30-40 dollar head phones. They do a good job of block out background noise. The zune volume is at 12 of 20 for these.

My Sennheiser CX300 sound great. The very efficent speakers with the excellent background suppression is means a listening volume of 9 under my helmet. If you ride a bike you know this isn't bad. I finally get off my bike with out ringing ears after a 30 min ride. They seem to stay in place pretty well. If you need it to stay in place for sure. You can turn the head phones up and use the wire coming from the speaker to secure it by pushing it in the ridge in your outter ear. THis doesn't irritate the skin or cardilige as they are soft. The only complaint that I have is the left wire is rather short. So when wearing a arm banded Mp3 player it is hard to get the correct length of wire so you don't turn your head and pull out the left head phone and not have an abundance of wire bouncing around trying to dislodge your head phones. THis is why it doesn't get 5 stars. Still an excellent set of speakers but there may be better choices if you are getting them for the gym.

3 out of 5 stars Snug fit but will shock the living daylights out of you   December 1, 2008
R. Semov (USA)
The earbuds are good, fit really nicely but the only problem I have which is a big NO-NO for me is that there appears to be a buildup of static electricity and the buds will shock me every once in a while right in the ear canal. This is a very unpleasant and annoying experience.

2 out of 5 stars The wires break easily   November 29, 2008

Sound quality is good enough for the price.
Isolation is okay, but not as good as Shures.

Despite its good features, I cannot get over its problem- wires break VERY easily.
Since these don't come with bags like the Shures, I couldn't keep them in perfect condition, but I certainly never abused them.
Nevertheless, I've had wires break TWICE, and it seems to be a pattern; I also saw complaints online about this issue so I'm not alone.

While cheap earphones are nice, I'd rather have one that lasts.
Shures, although expensive, are completely worth the price difference for their superior isolation, better build quality, and the protective equipment that comes with it.

So in conclusion, I will never buy Sennheiser's cheap earphones again.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for my needs   November 29, 2008

I have a very specific need when searching for earbuds. I suffer from tinnitus, and use my mp3 player to provide masking sounds (rain on a roof, say). So I need the buds to 1) be comfortable for long periods. 2) STAY IN! 3)provide at least reasonable fidelity. 4) block outside noise. 5) allow me to sleep with them on, i.e., not feel like a golfball in my ear when I lay on my side. These buds do all that, plus they sound good when I am listening to music. And they were not outrageously expensive either. A good purchase for my needs.
