At the time I started researching iPhone car docks this was the best option and that's not saying too much. There were only two or three docks out there that had both aux out and FM transmitter functionality. Most of the reviews I read mentioned the terrible clips that hold on to the iPod and the flimsy necks that flop around on rough roads and I agree. The FM transmitter works well and puts out a good clean signal but is nowhere near the quality you get when you use the aux line out. The "clearscan" feature looks for the cleanest radio channel on which to broadcast and the functions are easy to use. My biggest issue is with the overly complicated use of different clips and rubber pads needed to accommodate the different iPod models, they ship you about 6 of each and they are all incredibly tight. This is probably due to the fact that the base tilts to allow the different models to go into landscape mode but I would have preferred a clamp that can be adjusted. I use a stick on "skin" to protect against scratches and it was nearly impossible to insert and remove the iPhone withou a lot of effort and the skin is only a few millimeters thick. I ended up heating up the clips to get them to open up a bit. Some people have reported the clips breaking within a few days of use, but "bending" them out has allowed them to function problem free for a few months now.

I really miss my old DLO Transdoc but it isn't compatible with the newer iPods and iPhone that don't support firewire charging.

I had to return the product because it did not fit my case. It is a poor design because the connector on the base of the tuner is fixed or nested into the plastic. This only works if you use your iphone without a case. I did test it out and it seemed to work fine. But, i'm all about convenience and if I have to remove my case everytime I use it, then its not for me. I purchased another FM transmitter that has the same general design but the connector is attached to a wire. Thus, it can be used with my case on my iphone.

Below is my reviews of both the autopilot and the belkin tunebase
(tunebase section at the end)..

ALL THE BAD STUFF FIRST:

(1) the connector was a little tight (did not feel good like a new apple connector I bought)..
(2) it burned itself up within 1 week.. The controls are on the end, so you cannot help but push the controls to plug this thing into the socket (one of the times I did this, I head crackling, and the back lights no longer worked).. Amazon accepted the return no problem..
(3) This thing is a slave to where you happen to have the cigarette lighter..

NEITHER HERE NOR THERE:
All these iphone attachments operate about the same in that the audio from a call will not route thru the aux out cable.. I suspect when the audio is ported via the data connector (instead on the headphone connector), this is what happens.. The annoying iphone warning.. I saw it from time to time.. Oddly random.. When operating the skip fwd/back, and FF and rewind: The controls are very flakey.. But it was not the autopilot (it is the iPHONE) because thats how it does when I use the iPHONE display..

THE GOOD:
Great price for iPHONE charger that has audio line out too.. I was using a tape deck adapter (so I could have aplace to plug the audio in).. And then I used the headphone port, the iPHONE cell phone interference was tremendous.. For some reason the audio was much better when I used the audio out (that used the data port.. IE when using the little back on the autopilot).. Another cool thing was that I could pulg in the iPHONE once, and the audio was already connected (because it attached to the piece that goes into the cigarette lighter).. I cannot remember if the cell phone noise was gone though (using the audio via the data connecter)..

I am thinking about getting this one again (autopilot).. I just got the griffin tunebase, and I am returning it.. The autopilot was superior using the audio out to the tape deck (when I used the tunebase to the tape adapter, the audio would be very VERY base heavy.. not just opinion.. it was bad/broken bad.. Perhaps it was my tape deck)..

TUNEBASE:

The thing works very well to hold your phone in the car.. And the FM seemed to mo my car radio seemed to work better than how most reviews descrobe these things (it had a low band button and a high band button, and on the other side you can tune it yourself, and the button on the front searches for a free station to tune to).. There is another button that cycles thru several ??? to help get better reception to the car radio (I liked this feature)..

(1) $100 for holding the phone and charging it..
(2) The audio out was not usabe to my tape audio adapter (see above).. I might have kept this unit if it were.. because of the problems with the FM)..
(3) This is a slave to where you cigarette lighter is (and the flexible stalk is pretty short)..
(4) On my car, just about everytime I drive I hit one of the buttons by accident and reset the device to some other FM setting (then have to fiddle with it.. it seems continuously.. and I could not get used to it (gave it maybe two weeks).. Remember all the FM control buttons I mentioned: this makes it so just about anythere you touch it, you will bess up your setting..
(5) If you want to plug in the iPHONE with one hand, the stalk will need to be straight.. Although it was strong enough to hold the iPHONE at any angle (the plug in part was a tight fit.. probably on purpose)..

I believe I would have kept this device if:
(1) I was able to use the audio out instead of the FM,
(2) NEEDED IPOD OCONTROLS (all the buttons were for the FM part)..
It might have been worth installing some kind of cigarette lighter extender to get it away from my gear shifter that kept changing the settings..

One good thing, there was little (practically none) cell phone interference using the FM to my car radio..

After trying the Belkin Tunecast cable and being completely disapointed by its performance. I came back to a new version of an old faithful. Being a previous owner of the TuneBase FM for iPod, I like the easiness of use of the device. The TuneBase is still the best device out there to transmit music from an iPod or an iPhone. If your car allows you to plug the TuneBase FM get this device. Also the ClearScan feature actually works to help you find the best stations on the road.
