5 out of 5 stars Highly Effective--I Don't Fly Without These   December 1, 2008
TMStyles (California)
Yes, I know I am quite late in getting around to purchasing and using what has become the iconic leader in the noise suppression industry. But I have used my Bose QuietComfort2 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones for over two years and I have nothing but positive things to say about the experience. I have had none of the breakage or damage referred to by others in these reviews.

I travel by plane several times a year and I now grind my teeth if I ever forget to bring these headphones. They do just what they are advertised to do and they do it well. They are lightweight, store flat, and are easy to carry in the accompanying carrying case. They are very comfortable fitting over the ear with a very soft cushion forming a noise barrier. I have tried my wife's QuietComfort3 headphones that fit on the ear and I find them much less comfortable than these.

But most importantly, beyond the comfort and portability already mentioned, they work as well as advertised. Firstly, they are excellent at suppressing background and extraneous noise such as jet engine or highway noises. Just a flick of a small button and suddenly the external noise is reduced to an almost negligible level. After all, Bose designed these headphones primarily as sound suppressors for airplane travelers. Secondly, they greatly enhance sound performance when attached by the included wiring and connectors to an external audio source, such as an airplane's audio system, an MP3 player, or laptop. They came with the wire needed to connect to an external power source, several varying connectors, and a AAA battery that supplies up to 30 hours of use.

Although I use them exclusively while traveling, I am confident an audiophile would enjoy them in the comfort of a home or office. I strongly recommend this product for those seeking quality headphones for either noise reduction or audio enhancement.

2 out of 5 stars Good but have side-effects and don't last   November 27, 2008
Philip T. Fenner (Seattle, WA USA)
I've had these for 4 years and yes they work on airplanes to greatly reduce "flight fatigue." However... the side-effects almost outweigh the advantages. Where to start? The "vacuum effect" on the ears, a result of their noise-cancellation method, the "buzz-braaaaap" noise in the phones when anybody's GSM/GPRS/EDGE phone talks to the cell network (makes it really impossible to use them with your BlackBerry's mobile radio connection turned-on), the various parts that wear-out prematurely (also reported by others including disintegrating earpad surfaces, broken plastic brackets above each earcup, noisy and intermittent power switch), all even with very careful handling. And the audio quality is somehow just missing something... lacking clarity compared to for example all of Sennheiser's offerings. Mine are falling apart and with the GSM noise from my new BlackBerry, they're going into the Goodwill pile as soon as I get a competitor's. Oh, and they're overpriced (esp considering how soon they start to fall apart).

1 out of 5 stars Expected more for $300   November 21, 2008
Bob E. (Irvine, CA United States)
The left side of my QC2s stopped working after about 2 years; I only use these when I'm flying so they see light usage, about once a week. I went to the local Bose store and tried a new cable but that was not the problem. The warranty is only 1 year, and the best Bose could do was to offer to charge me $100 + tax for a replacement set. I really expected more for a $300 headset. I'd rather spend about $220 and try the new Creative Aurvana's which I heard are better then the QC2s.

1 out of 5 stars $300 for "disposable" headphones?!?   November 20, 2008
TioEmm (Oregon)
Think twice before buying these headphones!
Considering the price you will be disappointed by the quality and durability - these will fall apart even if you treat them with care!

I have been very careful with my QC2s, they have led a sheltered life in my cubicle. Like many many others, I've had the following problems:

1: The plastic pieces on both sides of the expansion/slide mechanism cracked. I did a serviceable repair using black electric tape. It looks really tacky, but the headphones are still usable.

2: The material covering the foam ear cushions is deteriorating. Black flakes on my shoulders. Black flakes on my desk, in my ears, in my coffee. The ear cushions are not replaceable. There is no fix for this. This will happen to you. My headphones are still usable for now if I'm willing to put up with black flakes. The writing is on the wall - soon the ear cushions will totally fall apart and the "disposable" headset will not be useable.

Sure, I have been happy enough with the sound quality (*I'm no audiophile*), the noise cancellation, and the comfort. But $300 was a splurge for me, and I am very disappointed that these did not last. Bose offers a $100 trade-in for a new pair of QC2s, or $150 for QC3s but there is no way I'll buy another pair.

5 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for!   November 11, 2008
M. Wang (LA)
You get what you pay for; this is a wonderful item, and it does what it says. Noise canceling, light weight, very comfortable. Try them in your nearest Apple store, and you'll notice that everything falls silent inside the(often a busy) store.

As for the price, $300 is a bit steep. I bought mine used for $150, and i'm entirely satisfied with paying that much for these headphones.

Pros: great weight, wonderful sound, noise canceling works better than anything I've ever tried. The leather feels good, and ear cups fit my ears very very well.

Cons: Pricing is a bit high, but you can't expect anything else from Bose. Also, the 5ft wire is a bit long, and I don't especially like using a AAA all the time. the battery life is about 20-30 hours, which isn't bad, but I hate changing batteries every week.

Overall, it's a great product if you're willing to cough up for it.
