Taylor Hackford (An Officer and a Gentleman) directed this 1993 epic about Chicano gang wars in the California prison system and the differing and tragic paths of three boyhood friends. Half-brothers Paco and Cruz grow up with their cousin Miklo in Chicano Los Angeles, and each in turn is influenced by their violent environment and the prevalence of drugs on their streets. Cruz becomes an artist but winds up tragically addicted to heroin, while Miklo serves time for murder and Paco becomes a cop, setting the stage for a confrontation between the two when Miklo is released from prison. The film strives for an epic feel but takes too long to set up its interweaving stories. It is notable, however, for some fine acting on the part of Benjamin Bratt and Damian Chiapa, as well as smaller roles by Billy Bob Thornton, Ving Rhames and Delroy Lindo. Its depictions of life in the California prison system are harrowing and powerful, and serve as the centerpiece of this urban drama. --Robert Lane

5 out of 5 stars Tough to watch   December 7, 2008
PJR (Minneapolis, Minnesota United States)
Chicano culture offers many wonderful things like strong family ties, a sense of art, and vibrant spunk even in the midst of poverty. The L.A. barrio is a mixed bag of such things, but also it has a subculture of gang violence and sucking sociological quicksand that can drag down young men into cycles of gangland violence and identity. All this comes together in this film.

It is pretty darned good, though so convincing that I actually found it hard to watch. I grew up near enough to the L.A. barrio to catch the nuances and authentic flavor. And I know a little Spanish and could follow a bit of the Spanglish that is interspersed with the English dialogue. Actually I am surprised that this film got so many five stars because I think you really had to have lived around this to appreciate how well done it is. There is actually a lot going on in it in terms of interpersonal relationships and also sociology and values.

In some ways I think of films like the Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith and Carlito's Way in terms of examples of ways of how culture can make it difficult to break out of a downward spiral.

Let me add that while the making of added feature talks about Chicanos trying to integrate into an Anglo America, this can be somewhat misleading historically. Don't assume that this culture is one of immigrants. These are a conquered people who were here many years before the U.S. conquest of California. They were subject to over a century of efforts to subjugate their communities and this tended to tighten their family and friendship alliances. I tend to see the strong bonds in the L.A. gangs and families as even stronger than in Mexico. These are not simply Mexicans that have immigrated to Los Angeles.

The acting is pretty intense. Some might think it overdone if they are not familiar with a certain type of Chicano macho style and value system.

All in all, really good. Though I would have thought not for everyone. I kept wondering how did this film find a general audience, or even a general Hispanic audience?

My thanks to the director.

5 out of 5 stars East Los back in the day...   April 5, 2008
Salomon D. Lopez Jr. (Los Angeles, CA)
I give this movie a 5 out of 5. I'm from East L.A. and this shows what it was like back in the day, pretty close. The only thing I didn't like was the pinche hueero's acting but besides that, it was all good.

4 out of 5 stars SAW THE MOVIE   February 5, 2008

Saw this some time ago. So now it's in the library. A rather interesting couple of hours. Not a waste of time.

While I am not a huge fan of the gang movies, my husband is. After having to watch it for the umptenth time, I have developed a tolerance. My husband thoroughly enjoys this movie and will watch it many more times.
