4 out of 5 stars Brilliant Music...From A Somewhat "Out-There" Band   November 25, 2008

Short sample previews of songs from Indie art-pop groups like Anathallo often can't come close to giving you a decent idea of what kind of music you'll end up with on the full version...such is the case with "The River".

This song starts out with solo piano in a very odd time signature (as heard on the preview), but that gives you no clue as to the musical masterpiece that's about to envelope you.

The "revolving-door" approach to band members used by frontman Matthew Joint since this project began pays off as the song moves forward...full orchestration with guitar-picking, horns and strings, then a wonderfully recorded drum kit with a "paper-sounding" acoustic snare drum enters the mix as the song heads into more conventional 4/4 time. The song drifts back into the odd time signature again, where we hear a beautiful instrumental section of cellos and violins, only to explode with excitement both vocally and musically at about the 3:30 mark. Matthew's vocals backed by Erica Froman's ethereal harmonies are excellent, although the lyrics are somewhat difficult to make out at times, and in all honesty, I have no idea what this song is about.

But it's the music that may blow you away here...the arrangement of this particular track is stellar...and what one might consider to be the "chorus" section of this song is absolutely outstanding...again, don't go by the preview on this one, because you'll be missing out on some brilliant music.
