2 out of 5 stars Where's the orginality??   January 6, 2009
Fritz D (Detroit, Mi)
If you like the rock bands of the 80's and 90's (when instead of rocking they did ballads) you'll like this. I didn't hear anything that hasn't been done before. I am a Cook fan from American Idol, but this album is weak. No self-respecting, rock-loving man I know would blast any of these songs in public.

4 out of 5 stars Infused With Crisp, Fresh Talent   January 6, 2009
Kathy A. Pippig (San Joaquin Valley, CA USA)
As a fan, I watched David Cook work his way to being selected the American Idol. I don't recall him disappointing--every challenge he met with a confident strength. David's voice is as pleasing when rough and edgy as it is when soft and infused with pain, as evidenced in his song, "Permanent". This album would be a great venue for his first tour!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional -- love this music!   January 5, 2009

I was rooting for David Cook all the way on Idol (sorry Archuletta fans, including my 70+ year old mother!). I couldn't wait, purchased the CD the week it was released, and immediately burned it to my Creative Zen. I haven't listened to my MP3 player so much it ages. I'm in my 40's, and it feels great to get the opportunity to "discover" such wonderful new talent. Every song is well worth the listen, but my personal favorite is "Permanent," which is obviously about his sick brother. Incredible.

2 out of 5 stars A talented singer but a tired album   December 31, 2008

From early in the American Idol competition last season it was obvious that David Cook could sing and he always had an entertaining personal style to nearly every song he performed.

This would have been nice to carry over into his debut album... no such luck. Rather then a creative, soul-filled exploration of David's talent, we get a tiresome collection of faux-inspired, rock-ballad-of-the-week tracks. Even the last track, the 'have-to' selection that an Idol contest winner wrote seems "shoe-horned" into the album as a lame after-taste of David's highly anticipated debut.

I truely hope he is able to take more creative leaps once he gets a shot at a sophomore release, but it's obvious he'll need to distance himself from the bland American Idol production work first.

2 out of 5 stars One Great Track   December 29, 2008

The good news: Bar-Ba-Sol - is the best song by far on this CD. I wish this track was the one they released as a single first. It totally kicks a**, is very hard, loud pumping percussion, you just want to get up and dance when you hear the first bars. DC's vocals are stellar on this, making him sound like he could indeed be a huge superstar someday.

The bad news: The rest of the CD is dull, and sounds all the same. Predictable, weak, wimpy weepy indi-rock crapola, imo. David, David, David...kick some a**! Don't sit in a corner and muse about existence and life to boring repetive soft chords! Rock out! (And lose the makeup, or maybe I'm just too old to find it sexy when a man wears eyeliner...)
